House Republicans meet to select a Speaker

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) arrives at a House Republican meeting to choose a House Speaker to succeed Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). Steve Scalise is currently the lead candidate to succeed McCarthy, who was ousted from his position October 3, 2023. There are currently 221 Republican Representatives in the House, and 217 votes are required to elect a Speaker. Scalise - or any other candidate - must receive near unanimous Republican support.
