House Republicans meet to select a Speaker
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), Chaiam of the Hosue Foreign Affairs Committee, talks to media as House Republicans meet to choose a House Speaker to succeed Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). He emphasized the urgency of choosing a Speaker because the House cannot conduct business, including business related to the terrorist attacks in Israel, until a Speaker is elected. There are currently 221 Republican Representatives in the House, and 217 votes are required to elect a Speaker. Scalise - or any other candidate - must receive near unanimous Republican support.
