The Story Of A Female Cremator (Dom) Baruipur, West Bengal
Relatives wait while Tumpa Das, age 29, a woman Dom, cremates a dead body in a furnace inside a crematorium in the Baruipur Panchayat area in South 24-Parganas district of Purandarpur Mahashamshan, about 39 km south of Kolkata, India, on November 20, 2024. Tumpa Das, age 29, has been in charge of the crematorium for the last 10 years since her father's death. She single-handedly handles the work, which is traditionally male-dominated. From registering the names of the deceased to the cremation, the work of the furnace is managed by this young woman alone. (Photo by Rupak De Chowdhuri/NurPhoto)
